Since its founding in 1987, the Kunta Kinte Heritage Festival has celebrated the perseverance, resilience, education, and rich cultural heritage of Africans, African Americans, and Caribbean people of African descent. Organized by the volunteer-led nonprofit Kunta Kinte Celebrations, Inc., the festival honors the legacy of Kunta Kinte, who was brought to Annapolis aboard the Lord Ligonier in 1767 and remained steadfast in preserving his African identity despite enslavement.
